Where Every Kid Runs to School
Morning drop-off in Cookeville has its own small rituals. A backpack gets zipped at the last red light, and a lunchbox gets passed over the seat. Then comes the best part. A kid hops out and races for the front door without a single backward glance. At Anniston Academy, that sprint has become a daily tradition. The private school opened in 2025 for children who learn differently, from autistic learners to kids with dyslexia or ADHD. Families say it’s the first place their children have felt truly understood, and plenty of those children now run through the doors excited to be there.
Inside, the classrooms are small and the pace belongs to each child. The Montessori-inspired rooms are full of manipulatives and hands-on projects that follow each student’s interests. Teachers trained in Orton-Gillingham methods lead literacy and math, and kids who need extra reading support get targeted help every day. Special education isn’t tucked away in a separate wing here. It’s woven into the whole school day. Applied Behavior Analysis happens right on site, along with speech and occupational therapy. That means therapists and teachers can compare notes down the hall instead of across town. Music therapy and nature-based learning round out the week. Every piece reflects the school’s motto: “Honoring Every Journey, Empowering Every Mind, Building a Village of Care.”
That village reaches well past the classroom walls. During Community Helper Days, local professionals visit to show students how their tools work, and nervous curiosity turns into confidence. Families get one coordinated team in place of a calendar packed with separate appointments. Now Anniston Academy has earned their 2026 Best of Tennessee Award for Private School. Back in the car line, that honor looks a lot like a kid who can’t wait to get inside.
