Where Adventure and Recovery Meet

Where Adventure and Recovery Meet

Few sounds compare to a fly line unspooling over a quiet creek as the morning fog lifts. For a teen at ARCH Academy, landing that first fish can be a turning point, a small win that builds patience and confidence. Fly fishing is one of the most popular adventure therapies at ARCH, which stands for Adolescent Recovery of Cumberland Heights. Since 1985, the program has given hope and healing to teens and their families. It serves young people ages 14–17 who are beginning their recovery from substance use disorder, often alongside co-occurring mental health challenges like anxiety and depression.

The program’s tagline sums up its approach: Recovery. Academics. Adventure. Residents live on one of two wooded campuses just outside Nashville: the Harpeth Campus for boys in Kingston Springs and the Ridgeview Campus for girls in Pegram. Each day balances individual and group therapy with classes at ARCH’s fully accredited on-campus high school, so residents don’t have to put their education on hold. Residents also build courage on a high-ropes course and zip line and help care for the campus therapy horses. For families who need care closer to home, ARCH offers intensive outpatient programs at Music Row IOP in Nashville and in Memphis, where teens attend several therapy sessions each week while keeping up with school and family life.

Addiction touches the entire family, so families are part of the healing too. Through individual sessions and family intensives, ARCH’s family programming helps parents heal right alongside their teen. Residents give back around Nashville by planting gardens and maintaining public parks. After four decades of helping teens recover, ARCH Academy is honored to receive the 2026 Best of Tennessee Award. If someone you love is struggling, ARCH is here to help.
