Summer’s Not Over Yet!
For a getaway that feels farther from home than the mileage suggests, head toward the Cumberland Plateau. The Town of Monteagle offers an easy base for a final summer breather, particularly when the overnight accommodations have considerably more character than a standard hotel room.

Burgess Falls State Park follows the Falling Water River past four waterfalls, while Rock Island State Park combines cascades, gorge views, hiking trails, and designated swimming areas. Sturdy shoes, an early start, and a quick check of current park conditions are sensible additions to the plan.
Near Townsend, Cades Cove offers a slower kind of escape. The scenic 11-mile, one-way loop passes mountain views, historic cabins, churches, cemeteries, and a working gristmill, with access to hiking trails, picnic areas, and wildlife viewing. Traffic may move leisurely, but a bear near the roadside has a remarkable way of improving everyone’s attention span.
For an outing involving fewer trail markers, Leiper’s Fork Distillery offers tours of its working distillery and tastings inside a restored 200-year-old log cabin. Tennessee whiskey made with local grains and traditional pot still methods provides a fitting way to toast the final stretch of summer.
