Purple Haze, Festival Days

Purple Haze, Festival Days

Some festivals hand out schedules. This one hands you a reason to spend an entire Saturday in Oak Ridge. The Jackson Square Lavender Festival returns June 20 with wine, gardens, live music, and enough lavender to make your car smell fantastic for weeks.

What began as a celebration of a beloved purple flower has evolved into one of East Tennessee's biggest summer gatherings. Historic Jackson Square becomes the center of the action as more than 150 artisan vendors fill the district with handmade goods, specialty foods, plants, artwork, and plenty of lavender-inspired products. The setting helps. Jackson Square already feels tailor-made for strolling, with its historic storefronts and walkable layout providing a backdrop that feels distinctly Oak Ridge.

Build Your Own Perfect Festival Day

One of the best things about the Lavender Festival is that there isn't a single right way to do it. Some visitors arrive with shopping bags and a mission. Others spend most of the day parked near the music stages. A full schedule of events runs throughout the day, making it easy to bounce between tastings, presentations, performances, family activities, and vendor browsing without running out of things to do.

The Tennessee Wine Tasting brings together wineries from Nine Lakes Wine Country, giving visitors a chance to sample bottles produced throughout East Tennessee's growing wine region. Meanwhile, the Learn at Lavender speaker series offers something a little different from the usual festival programming. Throughout the day, experts share presentations on topics ranging from growing lavender locally to butterflies, turmeric, and sustainable gardening practices. If you're the type who leaves a festival hoping to learn something new along with making a few good purchases, this is where you'll want to spend some time.

Beyond the Vendor Booths

The festival's biggest strength may be everything happening beyond the shopping. The Tour of Gardens, presented by the Master Gardeners of Anderson County, opens the gate to some of the area's most impressive gardens and offers a closer look at what grows well in East Tennessee landscapes. Families can head to the free children's area, while music fans can move between two stages featuring live performances throughout the day.

What makes the event work year after year is how many corners of the community show up to participate. Garden clubs, local businesses, nonprofits, artists, musicians, and volunteers all help shape the experience. While the festival itself is free, several individual events require tickets, so be sure to grab yours now!

By the end of the day, you'll probably leave with a few purchases you didn't plan on making, several gardening ideas you suddenly want to try, and a much better understanding of why Oak Ridge has embraced this festival as one of its signature summer traditions.
