Faith, Trust, & Pixie Dust in the Pines
For one weekend in May, Audubon Acres stops feeling like a quiet nature preserve tucked along South Chickamauga Creek and starts looking like somebody dropped an entire storybook into the woods.
The Fairy & Folk Festival returns to Chattanooga May 23–24, turning the trails, bridges, and forest paths of Audubon Acres into a wandering world of fairy houses, musicians, mermaids, dancers, and enough flowing wings to make glitter feel like an unofficial dress code. Somehow, though, it never tips into full theme-park chaos. The event keeps its Tennessee nature-center roots intact, which is part of what makes it work.
You’re just as likely to see families crouched near the creek spotting “mermaids” tucked into the water as you are groups of adults debating which handmade fairy house deserves to win the annual competition. Nobody seems particularly concerned with acting their age, which honestly improves the atmosphere considerably.
Hosted by the Chattanooga Audubon Society, the festival blends live performances, local art vendors, storytelling, and interactive activities into something that feels less like a tightly scheduled event and more like a choose-your-own-adventure afternoon.
Where Fantasy Meets the Forest
One of the festival’s biggest strengths is how naturally the setting does half the work. Audubon Acres already feels tucked away from the noise of the city, with wooded trails, creek access, and old-growth trees creating the kind of backdrop that barely needs decorating to feel magical.
Throughout the weekend, visitors can expect:
- Fairy trails winding through the woods
- Live folk music and dance performances
- Storytelling sessions for all ages
- A Vendor Village filled with local artists and makers
- Food trucks and casual bites scattered throughout the grounds
The event’s pacing also feels refreshingly relaxed. Families wander instead of rush. Kids stop every ten feet to investigate tiny doors nailed to tree trunks. Adults linger longer than they planned because somebody spotted another hidden woodland setup around the next corner.
Underneath all the whimsy, there’s also a real purpose behind the festival. The Chattanooga Audubon Society uses the weekend to spotlight local conservation efforts and environmental education programs tied directly to protecting the region’s ecosystems and green spaces.
That balance gives the Fairy & Folk Festival a little more staying power than your average themed weekend event. Yes, there are wings, costumes, and woodland creatures involved. But there’s also something genuinely charming about seeing a Chattanooga nature preserve filled with people slowing down long enough to appreciate the woods around them.
