A Day of Salutes and Service

A Day of Salutes and Service

Armed Forces Day lands on May 16, and while plenty of holidays ask for a sale or a long weekend, this one asks something simpler: to pause and appreciate the people currently serving in the U.S. military. Across Tennessee, communities are doing that in their own unique ways, going above and beyond in their recognition. From roaring engines to museum doors swinging open, the state has plans with plenty of personality.

Where Tennessee Shows Up for Service

If your ideal Saturday includes motorcycles, live music, and a little friendly competition, the CVMA® TN 18-2 Armed Forces Day Poker Run at Appleton Harley-Davidson is a strong place to start. Registration opens at 9 a.m., followed by a full day of riding, raffles, a bike show, and music, all benefiting veterans.

Clarksville has long-standing ties to the military community, so hosting a veterans-focused ride here is especially fitting. Expect polished bikes, proud riders, and a crowd that knows exactly what the day means.

If you'd rather trade highway noise for polished floors and curious exhibits, make your way to Lane Motor Museum. This Nashville favorite is packed with rare vehicles, unusual designs, and the kind of automotive history that keeps even casual visitors engaged.

On May 16, families can also catch MACROcar Rides for Kids, giving younger guests a chance to join the fun instead of politely enduring it. Parents get the history lesson, kids get the ride, and everyone wins.

Keep the Celebration Going

Some of the best Armed Forces Day plans don't end on Saturday. The Blue Star Museums program launches May 16. A partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families, this program offers free admission to active-duty military families at participating museums through Labor Day.

In Tennessee, that includes spots like Customs House Museum & Cultural Center in Clarksville and Travellers Rest Historic House Museum, making it easy to turn one meaningful day into a full summer of cultural stops. You can explore the full list of local museums that are participating here.

Armed Forces Day doesn't have to be complicated to matter. Show up at a fundraiser, plan a museum stop, thank someone in uniform, or map out a summer visit with family. Tennessee makes it easy to turn appreciation into something real.
